Tangerine [Lack Of] Falls
This past Sunday marked my 1st hike in Santa Barbara. I know, I know…I have been living in SB for 5 1/2 years and have never been hiking…I am not proud of this. However, in my defense, it was kind of hard to fit in amongst all my training.
Sunday was yet another beautiful day. The weather in SB for the past week and a half has been sunny with temperatures in the mid 70s. Due to my knee problems I have been stuck inside cross training on the eliptical machine or riding the bike. I decided to forego the usual cross training, enjoy the beautiful weather, and go on a hike.
I called up Scott and decided to head towards Cold Springs Trail. The tangerine falls hike seemed like the best one to do. It was a great hike and had some rock climbing added towards the end.
Unfortunately, due to lack of rain…there wasn’t much water falling, but it was still a great hike with some rock climbing thrown in. I had a really great time and can’t wait for the next one. Thanks Scott for being a great guide!

Me in front of the falls. As you can see, not much water.
Injured…again.
It’s January!! …and in my world that means it is time for an injury. This time it is especially hard to take because I was finally getting back into the swing of things after my hip surgery. I had hit my 1st week of 70 miles and was looking forward to getting up to 90 within the next month. I guess I can say bye to my 90’s now.
I was just thinking about it the other day, and I have had an injury that has required at least 2 weeks off in January for 5 out of the past 6 years.
Has anyone else experienced a common trend of injuries like this?
I do not know why it happens every January. Maybe my body just doesn’t like the cold or something…or maybe I eat too much during Christmas…or maybe my body knows how long Track season is and it is forcing me to rest. I am yet to figure it out and it is driving me craaaaazy!
I am in the unique position of being with a coach and training with the athletes at the same time. It is exciting to hear how hard everyone trained over break, yet frustrating at the same time because I was unable to. It is hard to go out to practice and watch all the workouts while I have my choice of being stuck in a weightroom sweating my butt off on an eliptical machine or in a pool freezing my butt off while I aqua jog.
My friend came up to me the other day and said…”I don’t need a calendar anymore, I just know that when you get injured it is time for the new year.”
Sorry for the depressing tone this bloglette has portrayed, but I needed to vent somewhere and that’s what blogs are for, right?
On a positive note, I know that as much as it sucks not being able to train now, I have plenty of time before I really need to run fast and I know I can be ready since I have done it in the past. It would just be nice to see what would happen if I actually got in a solid pre-season base.
